Gilded Age dark comedy shoots entirely at an 1873 mansion on Newport's Historic Hill
NEWPORT, RI — Principal photography has begun on Plucked, the Gilded Age dark comedy written and directed by Usher Morgan and Katie Vincent, produced by Dark Passage Films in collaboration with Hot Jam Productions.
The production is shooting primarily at Woodbine Cottage, an 1873 Swiss Chalet-style mansion on Newport's Historic Hill designed by architect George Champlin Mason as his personal residence. The house stands in for a Gilded Age New York home where a single dinner party comes apart over the course of one evening.
“We didn't want a set that looked like the period. We wanted a house that had actually lived through it,” said Morgan. “You feel the age of the place in every frame, and the actors feel it too.”
The film stars Katie Vincent as Katherine Greene, alongside Jared Canfield, Catherine Curtin, J. Anthony Crane, Bryant Carroll and Susan Gallagher. Giuseppe Masi serves as director of photography.
To ground the production locally, the filmmakers partnered with Rhode Island producers Chad A. Verdi Jr. and Paul Luba, drawing on the state's film community and production incentives. Vincent is also serving as wardrobe supervisor, working with Ukrainian artisans to source and build the film's period costumes.
“Every dress in this film has a history behind it,” said Vincent. “We're making a movie about what people will wear, and say, and swallow in order to look respectable. The costumes had to carry that.”
The shoot is scheduled to run through the fall.
